Overview

The PhD programme in Complex Systems for Life Sciences offers a strong interdisciplinary training through research projects in the area of Systems Biology. We use a combined computational and experimental approach supported by theoretical modelling, rooted in theoretical physics, engineering and mathematics. The full integration between biomedicine and exact sciences is the ground of contemporary approaches to complex biological systems. This curriculum is for Graduate Students in Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Medicine and Computer Science. Research projects include Genomics, Transcriptomics, Epigenomics, molecular regulatory networks and mathematical modeling of phenomena ranging from basic cell biology problems up to population genetics, with a major focus on human disease including cancer.

Phd Programme

One of the main themes of research in the bio-medical field in recent years is certainly interdisciplinarity. The integration between the world of bio-medicine and that of the exact sciences (mathematics, physics and computer science) has led to significant improvements both in terms of basic research and in terms of medical applications. On the one hand, new genomic knowledge has opened up diagnostic and therapeutic perspectives unimaginable until ten years ago; on the other hand the enormous amount of information made available by the wide-screen technologies typical of the post-genomic era required the ideation of new tools of analysis and made possible previously unimaginable levels of modeling of biological phenomena. This integration is typical of the modern approach to Complex Systems, of which living systems are the paradigmatic example. In a somewhat synthetic way, it is usual to indicate this type of approach to Biology as "Systems Biology" ("Systems Biology"): a trend that has seen in the last ten years an exceptional development with an almost exponential progression in the number of published articles and in the number of new dedicated journals.

This PhD programme offers a strong interdisciplinary training through research projects in the area of Systems Biology.

Prospective students should have an excellent score in their previous classes, a strong undergraduate science background, a strong commitment to research and they should accept the challenge posed by a new interdisciplinary science. Indeed the present curriculum is specifically interested in recruiting students with broad scientific interests and a taste for collaboration.

Research projects

Research projects include Genomics, Transcriptomics, Epigenomics, molecular regulatory networks and mathematical modeling of phenomena ranging from basic cell biology problems up to population genetics, with a major focus on human disease including cancer.

The list of General Research Themes is provided with the Cycle XXXV Call, available at the UniTo website, at the end of the call document.

To apply for our PhD programme Cycle XXXV, Candidates are required to write a short Research Project, in order to illustrate their specific interests and their ability in designing a sound and feasible research project.

To guide and facilitate this task, we provide at this link a list of more specific titles of reserch projects, proposed by Members of the Faculty, that Candidates may follow for writing their projects.
